Most sixteen-year-old girls are still spending their summers hanging out with friends at festivals – but Zsuzsi Filep is testing herself in the adult top division of Hungarian women’s football, while preparing for the biggest challenge of her young life so far: the U17 national team training camp.
Before boarding the team bus to Telki, she sat down with us for a chat. From the very first moment, she spoke seriously about her goals, but it quickly became clear: she’s not only focused and driven, but also a true team player—someone who smiles even when the work gets tough.
“I started playing at Vasas, and that’s where I really fell in love with football. Then at Ferencváros, I got a taste of what it’s like to play for a top team. A championship title, lots of great experiences… but now it’s time to prove myself among the adults.”
Far from Home—But in the Right Place
The summer club switch was no small decision. Szekszárd is a bit further from home, and moving from youth football to the NB I adult league is a serious step.
“To be honest, I was nervous. This is the first time I’ve been this far from home—a new city, a new environment. But after the first training, I already knew it was the right choice. The girls are so kind, the coaches are supportive, and everyone makes sure I feel welcome. That means a lot to me.”
So why Szekszárd?
“First of all, because of Attila Vágó—the amount you can learn from him is incredible. And when the owner explained the vision they have for the club, I felt it was something bigger. This is an opportunity I didn’t want to miss. It’s a project I want to be not just a part of, but to help shape.”
Wearing the National Crest Close to Her Heart
When the national team call-up arrived, at first she could hardly believe it.
“I was so happy to get another chance. I knew how much work I’d put in, but when news like this comes, you just stop for a moment—and then I just smiled. It feels great to know they count on me.”
What does she expect from the training camp?
“I want to make the most of every single minute: learn, improve, and prove that I belong here. I know this isn’t just a summer trip—it’s an important step toward my dream.”
Role Models and Goals
When asked about her role models, there’s no hesitation.
“Maria Szanyi was my coach at Ferencváros. I learned so much from her—not just on the pitch but off it, too. She’s a true example for me both professionally and personally.”
And the future? Zsuzsi doesn’t hold back.
“I want to become a key player that people can rely on. Here in Szekszárd, everything’s in place for that: a great coach, a great environment, and a great team. And of course, I want to represent my country in as many national team games as possible.”
Before matches, she says…
“I turn a bit inward and run through everything in my head. I need that focus so that when I’m on the pitch, things just come naturally.”
Zsuzsi Filep is not only talented but also humble, determined, and inspiring. She’s the kind of player whose career isn’t just about the results—but about the fire inside her that shines through every word she says. In Szekszárd, not just a new chapter begins—it’s an entire story waiting to unfold.
